Therapy that gets to the root
Go beyond the surface to create lasting change with trauma-focused and depth-oriented therapy. Let’s change patterns, not just symptoms.
Getting to the Root
I believe that true healing in psychotherapy requires digging deep to uncover the root causes of the challenge you're facing in this season of your life. Rather than just addressing surface symptoms, I focus on exploring your thoughts, feelings, and past experiences that landed you here.
This deeper understanding empowers you to navigate future obstacles with greater ease and alignment. Together, we'll transform not just how you feel in the moment, but how you approach life moving forward.
Your journey to genuine well-being begins with unraveling the deeper layers of your story.

Welcome. I’m Kaitlin.
I’m a licensed therapist (LPCC 17791) who is warm, intellectual, straight-forward and authentic. I create a therapeutic container that feels protective, grounding and nonjudgemental. Most importantly, I have an inextinguishable curiosity about the human condition.
I have 10 years of experience in mental health and social services in various capacities, including supervisory positions. Before becoming a therapist, I went to art school and was a researcher in the public sector. This informs my therapy practice as I have a deep understanding of intersecting systemic barriers. I’m able to hold deep complexity in an individual and a system and approach my work with creativity.
I have my Bachelors of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley and my Masters of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from San Francisco State University. I’m a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). And, I have been extensively trained in EMDR, trauma-informed, existential and person-centered therapy.
I currently see clients in California via tele-health. Any questions? Visit my FAQ.
How therapy with me works
Healing is a non-linear process. A safe, trusting and supportive space is critical to healing and creating root-level change. Below are stages of treatment you’ll pass through on your journey.
First, we gather data and make a plan.
We identify what is stuck or hurting. There are likely a lot of emotions connected to this place (feelings can be data too!). Therapy is a space to feel those emotions and develop tools and strategies to help you work with, tolerate, and understand them with more ease.
Then, we get to the root and create insight.
Why did this happen? How did it happen? How is it connected to the story of you? We try to understand the stuckness with a new perspective which builds a foundation for change.
Change is made.
From this place, it’s possible to create lasting change (instead of just treating a symptom). You may make different choices, change your behavior or have a deeper understanding of who you are, what you’ve been through, and where you want to go.
The benefits of therapy
Therapy is no easy feat. It takes engagement in a weekly session and sometimes reflection or ‘homework’ between sessions. As you integrate your learnings from therapy, here are some of the benefits you may experience:
More Choices
Processing trauma opens up choice. Instead of being in survival mode, you’ll gain clarity that allows you to see outside the story you have about life and yourself.
Expanded Capacity
Develop your ability to tolerate more uncertainty and big feelings, with ease. Higher capacity means less overwhelm and stress, more resilience and energy.
New Tools
I’ll introduce new frameworks, coping strategies, grounding techniques, worksheets, visualizations and more. You’ll leave with an arsenal of tools to call on in times of need.
More Ease
Moving through your daily life with greater ease is something we all aspire to. A newfound sense of calm will help you cultivate healthier relationships and a fulfilling life.
Know your Strengths
You have inherent strengths that are your foundation for building lasting personal growth. Recognize your capabilities to face challenges with more confidence.
More Agency
Gaining insight into old patterns helps you connect to your sense of self. Then, you’ll be able to set boundaries and make decisions in alignment with what’s truly you.
Specialties
I welcome clients of all backgrounds. These are my areas of expertise.

Do you feel like you’re constantly balancing your needs with the demands of everyday life? Or drained from having to advocate for yourself or manage your health?
Does your identity feel overshadowed by your diagnosis or condition?
Do others in your life have difficulty understanding your needs or the impact your health and/or disability has had on you, your job, or your relationships?
The majority of my career has been focused on working with individuals living with disabilities or chronic illnesses. I understand both the systemic barriers and interpersonal impacts.
Therapy can be a source of support to help you unravel and integrate these identities. It can also help you process and understand this part of you, the agency you have, and how you want to live your life.
-
Do you feel like you’re running on empty all the time? That even when you try to rest your mind is still running? Does guilt creep in when you try to give time to yourself?
I work with caregivers of all kinds, those who care for biological family or chosen family. Therapy can help you manage the overwhelm, set healthy boundaries, and care for others while caring for yourself.
-
Do you feel like you’re running on empty because you’re always taking care of others? Like you’re losing parts of yourself in the process of taking care of everyone else?
Do you find it hard to rest because your mind is racing with everything you still need to do? Like there’s constant pressure to keep going, even when you’re exhausted?
Healthcare professionals are expected to be the containers for their clients, hold the weight of their patient’s worlds while simultaneously navigating immense ethical complexities, systemic constraints, patient crises and at times, burn out and vicarious trauma. Therapy can help with figuring out and processing the hard parts and strategizing a way through.
-
You have impeccable attention to detail and think systematically. Feelings are more complicated because they don’t fit nicely into metaphorical spreadsheets and boxes. All of that brilliant thinking didn’t help as much as you thought it would to navigate the nuance and non-linear nature of the world. Therapy can help give you the tools to preserve the strengths of your expansive mind and find new ways of navigating feelings and relationships.
-
Change is a powerful thing. Life is always changing, sometimes gradually or all at once. A new relationship, a new city, a new job, a new role in your life can be all the things. Therapy can help you untangle the complexity of these transitions and process the excitement, fear, anxiety, or loss that can come with change.
-
Maybe you feel constantly overwhelmed, like your emotions are flooding you and you can’t catch your breath. Or maybe you’re getting stuck in the spirals, going down the rabbit holes, never feeling like you can do things exactly “right,” or having a hard time relaxing, even when things are going well. Therapy can give you the tools to navigate and calm the worry, work through the spiraling thoughts, and live your life with more ease.
-
You feel like your body and mind are stuck in survival mode after everything you’ve been through. You need help with facing the painful things you survived and it’s hard to know where to start to unpack everything. Your body remembers, even though you’ve tried to “put the past behind you,” but the memories and feelings keep coming back to haunt you. Therapy can help you get “un-stuck”. It can give you the tools and space to process what has happened and navigate the challenges you’re facing, so you can move forward with clarity, stability, and a renewed sense of control over your life.
-
When there’s a loss of a significant person, pet, relationship, or even identity, you’re grieving more than just what was lost - you’re also mourning the loss of the future you thought you’d have. Adjusting to a new reality can be overwhelming and hard. Therapy can help you untangle and process the complexity and emotional weight while helping you connect what was lost to a new path forward.
Incorporating EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a highly effective form of psychotherapy designed to process traumatic memories and reduce the emotional distress connected to that memory. Studies indicate 84-90% of individuals experience a reduction in PTSD symptoms after a few EMDR sessions (source: Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology).
EMDR sessions involve a structured process that includes recalling a memory and engaging in bilateral stimulation like guided eye movements.
EMDR is just one of the modalities I practice. Together, we’ll decide if this strategy is right to incorporate in your therapy! Feel free to reach out with any questions.
